Memento Mori: Self Portrait

Medium: Graphite on Bristol

Dimensions: 18"x24"

Artist Statement:

When I think of dying, I feel that I am more scared of how I die rather than dying itself. I’m not afraid of dying, but I do dread the process of getting there. Death is painful; watching people you love suffer or knowing you will leave your loved ones behind is one of the hardest things in life. It sucks, and it hurts; I don’t know how to say it any other way.

But even with all that, I have no reason to be afraid of dying. I believe in something greater beyond this life, something more beautiful than anything I could ever hope for here. I have peace about death because of Jesus. Life is short, and none of us know how much time we have. I find peace in knowing that God has already planned each of my days. I want to live them with purpose and intention. I don’t need to fear death because death isn’t the end, just the beginning of eternity with Jesus.

“Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.””
